meets green

Hamilton's green reputation is growing.

The city's main public works garage on Wentworth Street North has passed numerous audits to be registered to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2004.

The voluntary standard sets out requirements for environmental management with goals of helping companies develop guidelines that limit pollution and improve their environmental impact.

"It shows we're able to meet a well-recognized world standard," said Chris Hill, manager of the city's central fleet operation.

The fleet garage is the first city facility in Hamilton to be registered to an ISO standard. Hamilton is following the lead of other Canadian cities, such as Calgary.

Beyond the signal to the broader community, achieving the international standard is a morale booster for the 38 employees at the garage, Hill said. The city's green fleet plan, which features hybrid vehicles, an anti-idling policy and fuel data management, has already won awards for its innovation.
